title = "Villoglandular Papillary Adenocarcinoma of the Uterine Cervix with Foci of Small Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report",
abstract = "Background:Villoglandular papillary adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix is one of the variants of adenocarcinoma, and it has been reported to occur in relatively young women. The disease has a favorable prognosis if no lymphtic vascular invasion and no minor components such as small cell carcinoma, serous cell carcinoma, and clear cell carcinoma, are present, allowing a more conservative treatment to be undertaken. Until 1997, only 49 cases had been reported. Case report: A 52-year old womoan was diagnosed as having villoglandular papillary adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix with small cell carcinoma components. She underwent a readical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy and selective para-aortic lymph modes sampling. The pathological sections showed a predominantly villoglandular papillary growth with foci of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma; no lymph node invasion was noted. At her 10-month follow-up examination, she was free of disease. Conclusion: The presence of minor components with this tumor (small cell carcinoma and lymphatic vascular invasion, in this case) suggests a poor prognosis. Radical surgery with extensive pelvic lymph node dissection should be performend in this type of situation. Close follow-up and more case reports are needed to confirm the efficacy of this treatment.",
