N2 - Resveratrol (trans-3,4′,5-trihydroxystilbene) is a natural phytoalexin that has pharmacological effects on several human diseases: cancer, coronary artery disease and neurodegenerative diseases. Many studies have reported the application of resveratrol as a preventive drug for these important conditions. In addition, recent reports indicate that resveratrol may also increase the lifespan of yeast and fruit flies. The positive effects of resveratrol have largely been demonstrated in vitro or in animal studies, with only limited and inconsistent effects reported in clinical studies. In addition, roles of resveratrol as signaling sensor and gatekeeper are still not clear. In this chapter, we will summarize a group of potentially important roles for resveratrol in diverse biological systems, particularly in metabolism and in cancer.
