摘要

Bitter melon and guava leaf are rich in polyphenols which exert beneficial health effects to ameliorate metabolic diseases. In the present study, we examined the effects of bitter melon and guava leaf extract (EBGL) on hyperglycemia in rats given a high-fat diet and with diabetes induced by low-dose streptozotocin. Diabetic rats were then randomly separated into a diabetic group and different EBGL dosage treatment groups (groups A, B, and C at 36.5, 182.3, and 364.6 mg/kg/day, respectively) . The body weight, serum glucose level, insulin level, [glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) , and Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) were measured at optimal time intervals of the experimental duration. Results showed that treatment of diabetic rats with EBGL dramatically reduced the fasting blood glucose and HbA1c, and also improved serum insulin secretion and OGTT relative to the untreated diabetic group (p < 0.05) . Treatment groups showed lower weigh gain compared to the untreated diabetic group. However, chronic treatment of diabetic rats with EBGL could prevent abnormal changes in blood glucose and attenuate the development of diabetes.
