N2 - Anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) has been applied to analyze the
concentration of heavy metals in natural water for many years. However, if
water samples contain organic ligands, the analysis of these metals using ASV
will be severely interfered by the formation of metal complex. This artifact is
usually found in the samples obtained from rivers, estuaries and coastal areas,
especially highly polluted water samples. The degree of under or over
estimation of heavy metal contamination usually ranges several orders of
magnitude. To eliminate this interference, UV light treatment is usually
applied to release the metals from metal complexes. However, the time for
UV exposure required to eliminate the interference has not been logically
determined. Based on this consideration, the aim of this paper is to develop
an algorithm for eliminating the interference derived from metal complex
formation when conducting ASV in the determination of heavy metals in river,
estuarine, or coastal water.
