組織簡介
美國最早於1949年成立「吸入治療學會」，之後改名為「美國呼吸照護學會」，於是各界醫學人士開始重視「呼吸治療」並進行相關之研究及立法。根據美國呼吸治療學會（AARC）的定義，呼吸治療是一項有組織的醫療專業，在醫師囑咐或照會下，對心肺功能缺損或異常者給予診斷、治療及照護，目前美國醫學院多達五十所以上的學校設有呼吸治療科系。國內早期則是由中華民國呼吸照護學會以非正式教育體系培訓呼吸治療專業人員，近年，隨著醫療照護專業化的潮流，國內呼吸治療正處於快速發展的階段。
我國自民國91年1月公告實施呼吸治療師法，規定公立或立案之大學、獨立學院或符合教育部採認規定之國外大學、獨立學院呼吸照護治療系、所、組修課應經實習期滿成績及格畢業，通過國家考試取得證照者才可進行呼吸治療業務。自此呼吸治療師的培育，轉由大學正式教育體制負責，以提升醫療照護品質。本校於民國90年經教育部核准，於醫學院下成立呼吸治療學系二年制在職進修班，接著民國92年成立全國首間呼吸治療學系大學部，每年國家考試通過率高達九成，畢業生就業率高，準此，期盼以全人醫學教育之理念，配合我國醫療產業發展的需要，培養術德兼修的呼吸治療人才。
