Abstract

Tooth extraction in orthodontics has been a topic of discussion. Reviewing the history of orthodontic treatment, the question of extraction has never been concluded. The purpose of this study was to analyze the extraction percentage in orthodontic treatment and to evaluate the relationship between the treatment of extraction patterns and the demographic factors. The data of 484 charts from the orthodontic clinic at the hospital of the Taipei Medical University from 2003 to 2005 were collected. The extraction percentages of gender, skeletal patterns, and age (P<0.05) were 51.8%, 57%, and 46.3% from 2003 to 2005 respectively. Results presented that the percentage of the males received non-extraction treatment was higher than the one of the females. The non-extraction patients older than 30 years old and between 6 to 12 years old were more than 60%. There were 65.14% of the patients aged between 18 to 30 years accepted the extraction treatment. The percentages of the patients with skeletal class I malocclusions, receiving extraction and non-extraction treatments were almost equal. The most of the patients with skeletal class II malocclusions received extraction treatment. There were 65.41% of the patients with skeletal class III received non-extraction treatment. In conclusion, extraction in orthodontics is correlated with gender, age, and skeletal pattern.
