Abstract

Streptococcus mutans is one of the early colonizers of the tooth surface. The growth and metabolism of the pioneer species changed local environmental conditions enabling more fastidious organisms to further colonization and forming dental plaque. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a natural polypeptide product, ε-polylysine, against cariogenic S. mutans. ε-PL is a natural product came from one of the natural human essential amino acids: lysine. It has been approved in Japan as a safe natural food antimicrobial additive, and was widely used on multiple antimicrobial material manufacturing. Our study mixed 5% (w/w) ε-PL with five kinds of saturated calcium salt solutions: DCPD, MCPM, TTCP, Calcium Carbonate and Calcium Chloride. The mixed solutions were centrifuged, the precipitates were examined with XRD analysis and the antimicrobial ability on S. mutans of each treatment solution was tested with agar disc diffusion method. The preliminary results showed that the DCPD+ 0.1 M H3PO4 + 5% ε-PL group have had fair antimicrobial ability and the greatest amount of Calcium Phosphate precipitation.
