Abstract

Well-dispersed dye functionalized hexagonal crystal-like mesoporous silica nanoparticles were synthesized with high yield under dilute conditions, and the cell labeling capability was analyzed. The fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles with sizes around 110 nm were demonstrated to be internalized into 3T3-L1 fibroblast cells and to accumulate in cytoplasm. The mesoporous silica nanoparticles appeared to have no apparent cytotoxic effects on the fibroblast cells. It was shown that the cellular internalization appears to be generic for various cells.
