Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the current state of clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) and physician assistants (PAs) in Taiwan. The study sample consisted of 120 teaching hospitals, including 6 medical centers, 34 regional teaching hospitals, and 49 district teaching hospitals. Survey questionnaires were sent to the directors of nursing departments of these 120 teaching hospital. 89 directors completed and returned the questionnaire, for a 74.1% response rate. The major results were as follows: (1)Forty-three of the 89 hospitals had the positions of PA, CNS, professional nurse, advanced clinical nurse, nurse practitioner, and various other in addition to registered nurse titles. Nine of these hospitals used the title of CNS and 24 used the title of PA. (2)The number of PAs increased during the past 6 months. (3)The selection criteria, roles, job discription, and training programs were similar for CNSs and PAs.
