Abstract
Objective: Febrile convulsion (FC) is a benign convulsive disorder in children. Witnessing a child's seizure cause panic in parents, and their adverse emotional reactions can persist for a long period. Providing information and support for the parents helps them cope with these reactions. This study explored the agenda of FC parental conferences to evaluate the parental effects of the FC educational program. Patients and Methods: The two and half-hour educational program consisted of three sessions: (1) introduction to FC and its consequences in children, (2) suggested management of FC during fever and seizure episodes, and (3) parental discussion about their experiences with FC. This program was given 10 times with 129 families attending. Result: Using content analysis, we found two categories with seven agenda from 166 discussion issues raised by parents. The results revealed that parents concerns included: 1. Identifying medical issues related to FC, (A) prognosis of FC, (B) causes of FC, (C) diagnosis and relevant examinations for FC, (D) inheritance factors of FC. 2. Improving parental abilities in daily care of FC children, (A) first aid for seizures, (B) fever management of FC children, (C) immunization schedule for FC children. Conclusion: From analysis of the result, the authors found that parents have a strong desire to learn about FC and its practical management, and through parental conferences, parents also gain peace of mind. The authors also discuss the qualitative achievement of these parental conferences.
