Abstract
A series of studies lead to the discovery of the unique structural and biosynthetic properties of tannins contained in Combretaceae plants. Eighteen polyphenolic compounds from the fruit and fifteen compounds from the leaves of Terminalia chebula were isolated. Eleven compounds from the fruit of T. phaellocarpa, thirteen compounds from the bark of T. arjuna, eighteen compounds from the bark of T. catappa, fourteen compounds from the bark of T. paviflora, twenty-four compounds from the fruit of T. arborea, fifteen compounds from the leaves of T. calamansanai, nine compounds from the fruit and nineteen compounds from the leaves of Quisqualis indica, fourteen compounds from the leaves of Luminitzera racemosa and fifteen compounds from the bark of Anogeissus acuminata var. lanceolata were isolated and chemically determined. Eighteen newly discovered compounds were identified among all eighty-seven isolated compounds.
