Abstract
After infection of either permissive or nonpermissive cells by RNA tumor viruses, viral genetic information appears to persist indefinitely in the form of virus-specific, double-stranded DNA integrated covalently into the host chromosome (Varmus et al., 1975; Weinberg, 1977). In this report, we summarize our progress in deciphering the sequence of molecular events that culminates in the integration of viral DNA into the DNA of avian cells infected by avian sarcoma virus (ASV), and we offer our current view of the mechanisms involved.
