Protein coating on the titanium surfaces using glow discharge

Abstract

One of the disadvantages of dental implants is the 6-month healing time required. Shortening the healing time of osseointegration is an important issue for dental implant development. Glow discharge is a type of surface treatment which activates surface characters using gas plasma. Collagen is a key factor during the healing process and bone remodeling. Collagen-grafted titanium plates were evaluated in this study. The plates were treated by glow discharge with argon and allylamine.
Glow-discharged titanium plates were then grafted with type I collagen using the
cross-linking agents, bis(sulfosuccinimidyl) suberate (BS3) and glutaraldehyde
(GA). Surface conditions of collagen-grafted titanium plates were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometry. MG63 osteoblast like cells were cultured on the grafted titanium surfaces to examine the effect on cells. We detected the collagen component elements, C, S, and N, on the titanium surfaces. Enhanced cell attachment was shown on collagen-grafted titanium surfaces.
The results also showed a higher grafting rate in the GA group and that grafting
rates increased with GA and BS3 concentrations. MG63 cells revealed enhancement of cell behaviors in the GA group. The data indicate that collagen was successfully grafted onto the titanium surfaces using the glow discharge technology.
