Improved design of a noninvasive near-infrared brain oxygenation monitor

Abstract

Noninvasive determination of oxygen delivery to the brain was obtained by using a newly designed three wavelength optical system, which consists of low power laser diodes and photo detectors. Using this near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) system, we investigated the relationship between directly measured jugular venous O₂ saturation (SjO₂) and regional cerebral O₂ saturation (rSHbO₂) as determined by NIRS. Results from ten cardiac surgical patients showed good quantitative correlations.
