Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the functions of nursing for schizophrenic outpatients who lack adequate drug alliance. Method: This research was a qualitative study. The subjects were eight schizophrenia outpatients with inadequate drug alliance. The data were collected during the entire nursing care process, which provides the basis of the analysis. Results: The main functions of the nurse are: the competence of nursing care and patient empowerment. The competence can be divided into two major categories. The first category involves: (1) Assisting patients to explore themselves. (2) Assisting patients to accept their own emotions and to value themselves highly. (3) Giving Support in patients' motivation enforcement. The second category, improvement of self-management skills, involves: (1) Improving patients' self-management of diseases. (2) Assistance in self-management of drug therapy. (3) Assistance in self-management of daily life. Conclusion: The results of this study provide an evaluation of the importance of nursing care with patient empowerment, and development of the competence of continuous nursing care with patient empowerment. The results might serve as a reference for the development of continuous community nursing care. There can be further studies about developing competency assessment indicators, improving the use of resources, and exploring caring effectiveness.
