Assess of the changes of immune function on obese after using oat weight-loss meals

Abstract

β-Glucans have been documented to enhance the activities of both the nonspecific and the specific immune system. Our experiment was to exploration the effects of immunity of obese patient using commercial oatmeal weight-loss meal replacement. Commercial oatmeal weight-loss meals replace two usual meals of one day and participants were required to control the total calories intake within 1200 kcal per day. Ten participants were admitted to the study whose averages of age were 48.9 ± 11.5 years. Before the experiments, their average body weight and body mass index (BMI) were 65.6 ± 6.8 kg and 27.7 ± 2.1 kg/m2, respectively. After a twelve-weeks experimental period, the immune measurements of natural kill cell cytotoxicity (%) were significantly increasing (p<0.05); the B cells of lymphocytes subset were significantly increasing (p<0.05); the phagocytosis (%) in granulocytes was a significantly increasing (p<0.05) and in monocytes was a increasing tendency. The participants did not have any side effects during the experiment period. Therefore, using the commercial oatmeal weight-loss meals replacements can improve the innate immunity of the obese patients.
