Abstract

Whole-body hyperthermia for the treatment of cancer does represent a unique anesthetic challenge. With proper physiologic support, close monitoring and attentive anesthetic management, patients with advanced cancer can successfully undergo repeated exposures to hyperthermia at frequent intervals. This is in contrast to the otherwise healthy individuals with heat stroke, who may suffer serious consequences without immediate medical attention. Should this mode of therapy prove to be an acceptable and efficacious adjuvant to conventional cancer therapy, the procedure may well become common in most major medical centers.
