Abstract
Objective: To provide an accessible platform to easily exchange data using HL7 standards.
Design: Developmental process.
Setting: Clinical laboratories of three hospitals in Taiwan.
Methods: An open source intelligent HL7 agent that utilises a graphical user interface was used to map and convert schema from a laboratory database to HL7 messages.
Results: We successfully managed to convert data from a laboratory database into HL7 messages using the intelligent agents.
Conclusion: We have shown that it is feasible to convert data from a laboratory database into HL7 messages using an intelligent agent. This process can be applied to other forms of data exchange. We recommend that, whenever possible, agents used for data exchange should be open sourced.
