A study of the mechanism of UHMWPE particle generation with microfabricated surface features: In situ observation of single-tip sliding tests

Abstract

The ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) particle-generation mechanism was investigated by direct observation of the sliding process of the scaled-up single wedge tip on UHMWPE. The wedge-shaped tip was held in a fixed position on a vertical slider that can be adjusted in the vertical direction and constant normal loads were applied. The video observation shows that the wedge tip penetrates into the material. The contact area between the tip and the material decreased during the lift-up process and thus the resistant force started to drop.
