Abstract

The purpose of this study was to decrease the rate of possessing dangerous items of emergency room patients, and to prevent the patients from committing suicide or attacking people with the dangerous items in a psychiatric hospital. The percentage of patients holding dangerous items in the emergency room was found to be 11.24%. A quality control circle (QCC) was formed, and four strategies was used to resolve this problem from August 2003 to April 2004. The rate of patient's possessing dangerous items in the emergency room decreased to 2.93%. In addition, no related accidents occurred in the emergency room during the study period. The study showed that the rate of patient's holding dangerous items in the emergency room was reduced with the QCC approach. The quality control circle process successfully ensured the security of the healthcare environment and the quality of emergency care
