Abstract

This report focuses on the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to assist weaning from prolonged mechanical ventilation in an abdominal distension patient. DESIGN: Case report. SETTING: Respiratory therapy intensive care unit at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital. PATIENT: A 90 y/o male having severe abdominal distension prohibited weaning from prolonged mechanical ventilation. INTERVENTIONS: Initiation of three-time hyperbaric oxygen therapy as the treatment for severe abdominal distension that was unresponsive to the medicine. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Once three-time hyperbaric oxygen therapy course was reached, ventilator support was removed within 14 days. CONCLUSIONS: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was successfully used to facilitate weaning in an abdominal distension patient, possibly reducing abdominal pressure or direct effect on lung compliance. Further investigations of hyperbaric oxygen therapy intervention should be done to inform practice guidelines in difficult-to-wean patients suffering from severe abdominal distension.
