Abstract
Background and Purpose: Collective dwelling in the city is one of the important bases of community health promotion. In light the aging tendency, Taiwan's government encourages hospitals' community outreach programs to focus on geriatrics. Methods: This study aims at assessing healthcare need of the urban collective dwellings' residents with age older than 50 years. Results: Study results indicated 83.45% of the middle aged and elder residents are either completely independent only slightly dependent on their activities of daily living. In instrumental activities of daily living, more people need assistance in preparing meals and house cleanings. The worst deterioration in physical health is eyesight. 63.68% of the resident samples have eyesight abnormalities. Hypertension has the highest prevalence among chronic diseases; whereas psychiatric disorders, strokes and pulmonary diseases appear to have the lowest prevalence rates. In the area of mental health, very few people have negative attitudes. 54.97% feel good about their life and health, and 38.08% feel neither good nor bad. Conclusion: Most people will seek healthcare in hospitals and clinics when ill. The principal factors that influence the choice of care settings are physicians who are acquaintances, fame and quality of the facility and transportation convenience.
