適應、實現或對話？: 儒家傳統對現代性衝擊回應方式的考察

This essay looks back upon the history of interaction between Confucian tradition and modernity over the last one hundred years, in hopes of finding one inte ractive path between Confucian tradition and modernity through introspection and critique. The phenomenon of “ Modernity ” which has secured a stunning victory and legal standing in modern Chinese intellectual community exactly embodies the result of expandi ng “ modernity ” globally. On the basis of stance of Confucian tradition, the issue of concern over the la st one hundred years is that “ will it give rise to the debates if Confucianism is still essential in modern time” or “ will it be only suitable for schol ars ’ research in history or history of philosophy” in face of the impact from modernity . In thus context, there are three response methods in Chinese intellectual community over the past one hundred years: The May Fourth Movement, an anti -traditional movem ent , was the first one proposed in early years in the Republic of China , as the second one was embodied in a variety of “ adaptation hypotheses” amid which the prime part consisted in “Creative transformation,” and the third one featured the “ realization th eory ” of new -Confucianism. The common issues amid these schemes consist in carrying out personal viewpoints or simply an embodiment of self presentation , rather than delivering the dialogue that can hardly give interpretation properly. This essay thus prop oses a view: A real dialogue lies in that both parties “ combine jointly as a new common body ” in delivering the dialogue, as there should be one interactive path between Confucianism tradition and modernity that consists in the expectations over the genera tion of such common body.
