Abstract
Four box-core sediment samples from off northeastern Taiwan have been analyzed for extractable and bound fatty alcohols and sterols. The average ratio of extractable to bound fatty alcohols is 3:1. Extractable and bound sterols have approximately equal concentrations in sediments. Fatty alcohol distribution ranges from C14 to C32 maximizing at C22. The high molecular weight fraction (≥C22) has predominant proportions, and even-odd carbon preference index values in the range of C22-C30 average 9.9 and 8.3 for the extractable and bound phases, respectively, reflecting a predominant terrestrial input. Phytol has been found exclusively in the bound phase, indicating that rapid transformations are occurring on or prior to deposition of the likely source materials. Sedimentary sterols contain higher phytosterols than phytoplankton sterols. In general, the stanol/stenol ratios are low, suggesting an oxidizing environment. Station 14 has a concentration of total extractable sterols about 3 times the average of the other three stations.
