Abstract

This was a phenomenological study. The purpose of this study was to examine and describe the subjective experiences of 12 mothers who had children with malignant brain tumor, using Giorgi’s method. Each participant received an in-depth interview with a semi-structured interview guide. Total of 12 interview data was analyzed and generated into six phenomenological themes: seeking information about brain tumor, anticipating the loss of her child, enacting maternal role alone, stabilizing self-image, strengthening mother-child bond, maintaining the child’s hope. The findings showed that the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumor made a tremendous impact on these mothers. They took care of their children in a highly stressful situation. The more support these mothers got, the better coping ability they had. The findings showed that the pediatric oncology nurses could help these mothers by strengthening the support system, reducing stress, and preventing the side effects of treatment.
