Abstract

Objectives: This study discusses the estimates of hospital directors and accreditation surveyors regarding the newly introduced Hospital Accreditation System. Method: An in-depth interview was conducted with three directors in charge of preparing for Hospital Accreditation and three New Hospital Accreditation surveyors during December, 2005. Result: All three directors agreed that the New Hospital Accreditation system was good in principle. However, they worried that it created difficulties for hospitals preparing the material required for the accreditation and further increased costs. Nevertheless, all of the three accreditation surveyors confirmed that overall the system would result in benefits. Conclusion: The New Hospital Accreditation will further improve medical quality, but currently health system remains in a transition period. We suggest that health care authorities should continue to support hospitals in accommodating the New Hospital Accreditation. Moreover, health authorities should ask hospitals to independently improve the quality of their medical care to comply with the New Hospital Accreditation.
