Abstract

This study developed a set of birth ball exercises for use during labor and to conduct a preliminary evaluation of the subjective birth experiences of participants. The content validity of the VCD was established by eight health professionals, and then evaluate the VCD using a mixed-method study design. Thirty pregnant women in their fifth month pregnancy and five parturient women who had used the birth ball during labor were selected. A ”birth ball exercise VCD evaluation form” was used to assess the developed VCD, and a qualitative research in-depth interviews were conducted to the birth experiences of participants. After the application of birth ball exercises during labor, the results found that most of the items on the birth ball exercise VCD evaluation form received an average grade of 4 or higher from the 30 subjects, except for five items. Additionally, four themes were derived from the in-depth interviews: (a) the attendance of a professional was necessary to assist in using the birth ball; (b) the birth ball exercises relieved uterine contraction and increased comfort; (c) the birth ball exercises helped maintain and upright position and accelerated delivery; and (d) the birth ball exercises improved the selfconfidence during labor. This study found that the VCD may provide a reference for nurses involved in promoting childbirth education and providing antenatal information consulting. Childbirth educators should also encourage pregnant women and their partners to practice these exercises during the prenatal period. On the aspect of future nursing applications, the ball exercises offer a means to psychologically prepare women for delivery and improve their related knowledge. Finally, performing the ball exercises during labor can reduce labor pain and improve uterine contractions, facilitating a positive delivery experience.
