Abstract

It was well known that topical fluoride agents may influence the surface roughness of resin composites. Acidulated fluoride agents had more significant adverse effects than neutral sodium fluoride agents. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of various viscosities of topical fluoride agents on morphological characteristics of resin composites, and the surface roughness of modern resin composites after fluoride challenge. Five fluoride agents with different viscosities were evaluated in the study. These materials were applied to 5 varied resin composites. The fluoride gel-induced surface roughness was compared by light reflectance of control and treatment halves, and was rated by specific criteria. After comparison, the surface degradation of the resin composite was studied using SEM. The results showed that (1)The surface damage caused by the topical fluoride agents was less with the photo-thermal polymerized resin composites in comparison with the conventional light-curing resin composites. (2)The APF foam and conventional APF gel were the most destructive agents, neutral NaF gel was less destructive, and thixotropic APF gel was the least destructive one. Thus, we suggest that patients who have had resin composite restoration and need regular topical fluoride applications should use thixotropic APF gel to prevent damage to previous restorations.
