Abstract
Introduction: The size of the primary lesion of oral cancer largely affects the staging and even treatment strategies. Standard pathological specimen processing may change the size of the specimen, and possibly result in different pathological staging and treatment strategy. I3ased on our study on oral surgery specimens and animal tissues, we tried to evaluate and estimate the potential size changes of oral surgery specimen during the surgery and specimen processing.
Methods: The changes of specimen size before and after surgery were recorded. The changes of specimen size during formalin fixation and histology slide processing were evaluated using an animal tissue model.
Results: The length of oral surgery specimen decreased 12.67% after surgery. The length of animal tissue decreased 7.25% after formalin fixation. The length of animal tissue increased 5.00% after histology slides were done.
Conclusion: The size of oral surgery specimen decreased after standard processing of the specimen. According to our study, the T staging of oral cancer could be underestimated under standard specimen processing, and subsequently affects the treatment strategy for the patients with oral cancer.
