Abstract
his essay aims to raise introspection toward the interpretive tradition of Taiwanese ballads through the perspective of popular culture to indicate its interpretive methods, further overlooking the influence of the readers’ subject positions and articulation when giving interpretation amid falling into the trap of loss in context center. Another loss for the traditional interpretation of Taiwanese ballads consists in the context of confusing the “Populace” with “The people on Taiwan” of the Taiwanese ballads. In such context, this essay advocates retreating to the path of popular culture to conduct interpretation, while the problem consciousness for research of popular culture lies in the concern to what this assay has done or what it has been used for certain purpose, instead of what is the context. In the respect of interpretive methods, this essay advocates “Populace” is not the subject position based on the stance of single subjectivity. In the interpretive strategy of popular culture, interpreters can roam through different subject positions freely, and connect with the interpretive context in daily life at will, i.e. “Populace” takes one variable “nomadic entity” to roam through the popularcontext to give interpretation. Finally, this essay hopes to specify the research direction for the realm of research in Taiwanese ballads through this research.
