The Investigation of the Gutta Percha Temperature Change on Vertical Compaction of Warm Gutta Percha Technique

Hermetically obturation of root canal systems is one of principles for the successful endodontic treatment. Traditional vertical compaction of warm gutta-percha technique (Schilder 1967) and a modified technique called continuous wave technique (Buchanan 1994) are major techniques for warm gutta-percha root canal obturation. However, the gutta-percha temperature rise pattern in these techniques is still unclear. The purposes of this study are going to analyze the content and physical properties of nine brands of commercial gutta percha and to determine the ideal gutta-percha molding temperature for compaction in the warm vertical compaction procedures using infrared thermography. The preliminary data demonstrated that the contents were different by SEM-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Thermogravimetry analysis and differential scanning calorimetry showed that melting point of the commercial gutta percha between 47.06 ˚C ~64.61˚C. However, both of glass transfer temperature and compaction forces were different among the commercial brands of gutta percha. Our results demonstrated that Autofit TM needed the smallest compaction force in the four tested gutta percha. Infrared thermography exhibited that the temperature at last 3mm was remain at room temperature when down packing to the distance from the apical 5mm and 4 mm to the apex may be the proper deepest down packing distance for the vertical compaction of warm GP technique., Heating and compacting gutta percha twice at 3 mm from the apex can mold the gutta percha completely. This study observed that the temperature of gutta percha was affected by heating pattern, compaction time and the location of deepest down packing. We will use infrared thermography to evaluate the other brands besides Autofit TM in the warm vertical compaction model and to examine the other gutta percha physical properties to heat and compaction force in order to analyze the standard procedure for vertical compaction of warm gutta percha technique for increasing the success rate of endodontic treatment.
