Background: With an aging population arthroplasty has become one of the most common surgical in elderly. Patients with long-term recovery status and trends of quality of life improvement, it needs to establish localization of evidence-based data. AIMS: The purposes of this study are 1) to explore the life experience and difficulty in preforming ADL among pre- and post- THR/TKR patients; 2) to investigate joint functions and QOL among the patients; 3) to follow up physical activity, joint functions and QOL among the patients; 4) to compare the patients’ outcome variables with the healthy people, and to compare the differences between THR and TKR. Methods: In the first, the authors will interview patients and transcribes data; content analysis will be used to describe patients’ life experience. In second stage, a cross-section survey will be conducted to collect joint function and QOL data of patients preoperatively, 1 year and 3 year postoperatively. The third stage, a longitudinal study will be designed to follow the patients PA, joint function and QOL. The participants will be recruited in a medical center and a district teaching hospital in Taipei city. Total sample size estimates 20 in 1st year, 240 patients in 2nd, and 120 in 3rd year (including 40 healthy people). The measurements include interview guideline, Euro Qol, Oxford Hip score, Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale (LKS), Life style survey, and Pedometer. SPSS for Windows 19.0 software will be used to analyze data, statistical methods includes descriptive analysis, repeated measure for ANOVA, Pearson correlation, t-test, and χ2. Expected results: The results can obtain empirical data on changing in joint function, health-related quality of life, and the level of physical activity before and after THA and TKA surgery; comparing the difference between these two kind of surgery patients; and comparison with the healthy control group differences in each variable.
