Immediate and Long-Term Effects of Different Dose of Resistance Exercise on Functional Physical Fitness, Serum Bdnf and Igf-1 Levels among Elderly

The first year of this study aims to investigate the change of different modes (intensity- and dose-specific) of the single resistance exercise on functional physical fitness, serum BDNF and IGF-1 levels among elderly. In order to further understand the benefits of long-term intervention, based on the resistance mode of the previous year, we changed into intervention for 10-week training, to explore the effects of serum BDNF and IGF-1 levels of functional physical fitness among elderly (in the second year of the proposal). The method of the research in the first year, twenty elderlies above 65 years old will be recruited to undertake four resistance training (StvHi, StvHr, HtvHi, and LtvHr) with a counterbalanced order, to examine the change of serum BDNF and IGF-1 levels pre-, immediately post-, and 30 min post-exercise. In the second year, will recruit fifteen elderlies of above 65 years old in each group, all participants will be randomly assign into StvHi, StvHr, HtvHi, and LtvHr groups. After completing the test of functional physical fitness, serum BDNF and IGF-1, all training groups will receive three sessions per week for 10 weeks, post-tests will be conducted after the first and four weeks of training. Data will be analyzed using are repeated measures (mode by time) and mixed design (group by time) two-way ANOVA. Through this study, it is expected to know what kind of resistance exercise pattern and to consider the impact of exercise dose on elderly functional fitness, neurotrophic factors and synthetic hormones, as well as to provide a reference for resistance exercise prescriptions for elderly people toward healthy aging.
