Description
Numerous benefits of breastfeeding on the health of the infant, mother, and community are well established by scientific evidence, but great difficulties still exist for mothers to maintain optimal breastfeeding practice. Among multifactorial determinants contributed to suboptimal breastfeeding, mother’s breastfeeding knowledge, skill, and confidence are modifiable to interventions. However, the traditional prenatal education primary emphasizes on the breastfeeding knowledge component which is limited for mother’s coping in real breastfeeding situations. An integrated breastfeeding education program which incorporates simulation education, mindfulness training, and professional support targeting the self-efficacy of the new mothers and their partners is of vital importance. In this proposal we plan to conduct a randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of an integrated breastfeeding education program focusing on mothers and their partners. The primary objective of this proposal is to evaluate the effects of an integrated breastfeeding education program on exclusive breastfeeding at six months postpartum. The secondary objective is to determine the effectiveness of breastfeeding interventions on psychosocial correlates of exclusive breastfeeding, including self-efficacy. A total of 200 couple pairs of women and expectant fathers will be recruited and randomized into the experiment group (receiving an integrated breastfeeding education program), whereas the 200 couple pairs of participants will be allocated in the control group receiving traditional breastfeeding care. Intention-to-treat analysis as well as mixed regression modeling will be adopted to estimate the effectiveness of the interventions. The effectiveness of breastfeeding education program will be important for the development of breastfeeding intervention and health policy for achieving optimal breastfeeding.
