Project Details

Description

Oral health status can affect people physically and psychologically. A variety of oral health-related quality of life instruments have been developed and the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) is one of the most comprehensive instruments available. Saliva constantly bathes the teeth and oral mucosa, the fluid is importance for maintenance of oral health. Under normal condition, saliva acts an active protective role in oral health. Numbers studies reporting that saliva functional losses cause a clinically oral imbalance manifested by increased caries incidence, susceptibility to oral infection, difficulties with speech and swallowing food, and altered taste perception. Patient satisfied with removable partial dentures (RPD) is relatively low (47%). The association between total antioxidant status (TAS) and oral pathology status were well conducted but studies of association between TAS and success of RPD is still lacking. The specific aims in this study are a). to elucidate the association between OHIP and success of RPD. b). to elucidate the effect of OHIP and salivary functional on the clinical performance of dentures. c). to elucidate the effect of OHIP and salivary biomarkers on the clinical performance of dentures. The study will recruit 200 subjects who received RPD at Department of Prosthodontics, Taipei Medical University Hospital. OHIP, saliva collection, clinical examinations of oral cavity were performed during the RPD treatment process. The TAS and SOD activity in each patient’s saliva was measured with commercial kit and ELISA reader. This study is in cooperation with basic science, public health, and dental clinical issue to elucidate the association among oral health, salivary oxidant stress, and success of RPD. This study will help to establish the risk factors and establish markers to screen at risk individuals for RPD failed population.
