Description
Malaria early warning systems provides a useful risk indicator for malaria eradication campaign, and health department can locate disease prevention resources at major disease hotspots. Malaria is a vector-borne disease, which can be affected by multiple environmental parameters, such as climate, landscape and population movements. Various environmental or climate changes can bring different impacts on disease transmission. Understanding the relationships between environmental conditions and malaria allows us to develop disease early warning models. In addition, the early warning system should be operated by public health workers, thus introduce an automation process will simplify the operational complexity and enhance the efficiency of disease prevention. This proposal will continue our previous collaboration with the Swaziland National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) on climate research and step forward to establish a malaria early warning automated system. The Kingdom of Swaziland has entered the pre-elimination stage of malaria eradication program, aware of the risk level of malaria transmission is critical for future disease elimination efforts. Therefore, the study will work with the NMCP and Swaziland Meteorological Service to integrate multiple environmental data (climate, landscape and population movements) derived from satellite remote sensing images and ground-level weather stations and geographic information system (GIS) techniques to develop spatio-temporal risk models and estimate the effective reproduction number, which will allow us to quantify the malaria vulnerability and receptivity in Swaziland. Combining with cloud technology, an automated processing system with user interface will be integrated in the early warning system to assist the NMCP on the malaria eradication work. Swaziland is Taiwan’s important diplomatic partner who is one of the candidate country to achieve malaria-free in the sub-Sahara Africa area. The development of the malaria early warning system can make a significant contribution to assist the country in its goal of eradicating malaria by 2020. The achievement will help Taiwan to enhance the international visibility in public health and medical cooperation.
