Project Details
Description
The purpose of this study is to create an appropriate model of long-term care for taking care of indigenous disabled elders by incorporating the concept of cultural care to the system of long-term care. Indeed, the national long-term care system was created in 2008 by the government. However, most indigenous elders are not covered by the system due to the low accessibility, low availability, low acceptability, and low quality of long-term care services. Cultural care refers to the care that meets the requirements of specific cultural characteristics, meanings and qualities. To practice cultural care, it is necessary to study the cognitive processes, behaviors, and material creations of disabled elders firstly. Then, it will contribute to improving the accessibility, availability, acceptability, and quality of long-term care services. A three-year research will be conducted to study the long-term care of the Truku, the Amis and the Bunun in Hualien between 2017 and 2019. Ethnographic methods and the approach of formative research will be applied to study the cultures of care and uses of the national long-term care services in the context of indigenous household. And yet, we hope this study will be able to inform the importance of incorporating cultural care to take care of indigenous disabled elders.
