Project Details

Description

This project will be integrated into the clinical, biomedical materials, machinery, computer simulation and other fields of expertise to provide the anatomical sacral locking plate fixation system additive manufacturing platform. In the past, long segment spinal surgery often needed lumbosacral fixation; however, the bone quality of sacrum often is osteopenic and prone to have implant loosening. Due to the complexity of the sacral bone structure, the screw insertion around these areas also may lead to nerve damage. To solve the above clinical problems, this integrated project will use the computer simulation design to produce the three-dimensional printed additive manufacturing of anatomical sacral locking plate, which can have the strong fixation effect as traditional fixation plate, but also be well-fitted to the anatomical shape. For this study, the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Taipei Medical University Hospital and ITRI had developed 3D printing Ti6Al4V for medical devices in the past. Therefore, the project will aim to utilize the Ti6Al4V-based additive manufacturing technology for producing the optimized sacral locking plate, and also perform mechanical simulation, animal testing, and clinical evaluation for the artificial printed 3D implant to be the most suitable fusion implant for lumbosacral fixation. The results of this project will be expected to be an innovative force-bearing anatomical sacral locking fixation plate, a full range of structural and elemental analysis, and a reliable anatomical sacral locking fixation plate system design database with corresponding bioconformity performance data. Successful experience will provide a blueprint for the development of 3D printing medical technology, establish the direction of industry-university cooperation and provide better clinical treatment.
