Description
Nanotechnology has been a hot topic worldwide. In agriculture and food production, a number of applications of nano products are emerging with the capacity to impact both the food industry and consumers in terms of food processing, packaging and production. Nanotechnology has been shown to bring significant benefits to human life. However, like some new technologies, it may introduce potential hazard to human health and environment. There are literatures concerned with the safety or toxicity of inorganic nanoparticles (such as gold, silver, carbon tube). Nontheless, very few literatures reporting the safety assessment of nano food. It is essential to build-up systematic studies on safety of nano food for assuring the health of consumers. Nano particles can enter human bodies through the respiratory tract, skin and gastrointestinal tract. Among those, gastrointestinal tract is the most common way for food. Particles entering from gastrointestinal tract are distributed mainly into kidney, liver, spleen, lung, brain and the digestive tract. It remains unknown that can nano-particles pass blood-brain-barrier to get into brain. Appropriate regulatory guideline is one way to lead the growth of nanofood and to prevent consumers from hazard caused by related products. In addition, it is essential to let publicity be aware of the properties and utilization of nanofood for promoting nanotechnology in food. As the increasing interest in applying nanotechnology and concerns on the potential hazard of nano mateirals, European Community have attempted to identify knowledge gaps including issues on food safety, reviewing current risk assessment procedures, supporting of further food safety research and developing guidance on adequate and accurate methodologies to assess potential hazard of nanoparticles. The objectives of this proposal are summarized as below: 1.Continued to collect the latest Nano-Tech management information of worldwide and to develop the nano food safety assessment industry guidelines. 2.Develop the draft of “Nano-scale food safety assessment method” and “Nano-scale food packaging materials safety assessment method", and host at least three public committees. 3.Host the International Symposium to discuss the managemen of Nano-scale food and of Nano-scale food packaging materials. We would invite at least two foreign experts and domestic experts. 4.Investigate the domestic industry who produce Nano-scale food or Nano-scale food packaging materals to know the current situation, such as nano materials, nano-manufacturing, nano process and its product application types. 5.Arranged a site visit to check the domestic industry who produce Nano-scale food or Nano-scale food packaging materials. 6.Host the Nano-scale food management education commettees to enhance public knowloge of Nanotechnology in food safety. It will hold 2 commettees in each of the northern, central, southern part of Taiwam. 7.Propose the draft of Nano-scale food and Nano-scale food packaging materials management strategies and propose the education post of the risk assement about Nanotechnology in food to consumers and industry.
